Sowing and Reaping: A Natural Law of Life.
SOWING AND REAPING: A Natural Law of Life.
Perpend the following:
“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap” (Galatians 6:7)
Edeh is from an agrarian community known for farming on Cassava, yam and other crops. The two seasons of the year are imperative to the community: planting (sowing) season and harvesting (reaping)season. For Edeh and his people, they know that it is natural that whatever you plant during the planting season that is what you will reap or harvest when it is time for harvesting. You cannot plant only yam in your farm, and you expect to harvest cassava, or plant only corn and you expect to harvest another crop other than corn. Whatever you plant is what you will reap. If you sow wheat, you reap wheat. If you sow kindness, you will reap kindness. If you sow a lie, a quarrel, or a slander, you will reap the same. There is no miracle or magic about it. This is how God made it for the world He created. The warning, “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap,” should make you very careful of what you sow.
This principle prevails as long as the sun shines; for the scripture says, “As the earth remains, seed time and harvest ...shall not cease” (Genesis 8:22). This means that nothing can stop the principle from working.
The principle of sowing and reaping signifies that our actions, choices, and intentions like seeds we plant, will produce results whether positive or negative, that we will experience as a harvest. It emphasizes a causal relationship between action and consequences, where our choices shape the outcomes, we experience.
Sowing: refers to the action, choices, and seeds good or bad that we planted in life, whether our relationships, our work, our character, or our spiritual lives.
Reaping: refers to the harvest or results that we experience because of our sowing, which can be positive or negative, depending on the nature of the seed.
Examples of Sowing and Reaping
Spiritual: If we sow to the flesh, we reap the flesh meaning that if we prioritize our own desires and selfish interests, we will reap destruction. If we sow to the spirit, that is, if we follow a spiritual path and prioritize spiritual growth, we will reap eternal life.
Everyday life: If you invest time and effort into developing good habits, you will reap the rewards of increased productivity and wellbeing. If you neglect your health, you may reap negative consequences like illness.
Generosity: Giving and sharing with others, like sowing seeds of kindness, can lead to harvest of love, connection, and abundance.
Kindly perpend the following key concepts and application of sowing and reaping:
The principle of sowing and reaping highlights the natural law of cause and effect, reciprocity, and boomerang, where every action has a consequence. “For every action there is an equal re-action” (Newton). It emphasizes that we are accountable for our actions and choices, and we will reap the results of our deeds. This should motivate us to conscious choices and make us to sow seeds of positive change in our lives. It also suggests that we can reap more than what we sow, especially when we sow bountifully. “Remember this; Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully” (2 Corinthians 9:6).
Applying this principle to personal growth encourages us to focus on developing positive qualities and habits, which will yield positive results. Building strong relationships requires sowing seed of kindness, respect, and trust, which will lead to a harvest of love and connection. In Financial well- being, making wise financial choices, like investing in the future, can lead to a harvest of financial stability and security. Applying this principle by contributing to our community and making a positive impact can lead to a harvest of thriving and connected society.
“Everything you do, everything you say, every choice you make, sooner or later comes back around” (Anonymous)
“If you don’t like what you are reaping, you better change what you have been sowing” (Jim Rohn).
